The cost of tuition increases about 8% a year, so the cost of tuition doubles every nine years. This means that $1000 of tuition in 1970 would now cost you $16,000. (Information from FinAid.org)

In todays economy, graduates are having a very difficult time finding employment. Nearly half of last years graduating class is unemployed or underemployed. Obtaining student loans while attending school has become a part of the student registration process at most colleges.  Loan payments can sometimes be deferred for a period of time after graduation, but interest continues to acrue.  It is a sad fact that  many young people  find that they are having trouble making ends meet.

Student loan debt is at an all time high.
July 1, 2013  the student loan debt in the United States reached 1.1  trillion dollars and has surpassed credit card debt. Students are drowning in debt!

Unfortunately defaults on student loans are on the increase.

As writer Mary Ellen Bell points out:
Lenders take very little risk on those loans. If a student defaults on a guaranteed student loan, the federal government makes the payments. If the borrower defaults on a private loan, the lender imposes higher interest rates and penalties and garnishees wages. Even if a strapped former student declares bankruptcy, student loans won’t be forgiven like other debts.
Some students obtain financial assistance as they start their college education by obtaining grants and scholarships. But for students that aren’t so fortunate — they end up working their way through school and making whatever sacrifices they must in order to graduate. Obtaining funding through the use of student loans is often necessary so that they can complete their education.
